Born "Joseph Benton," he was a student of Oscar Saenger's in Chicago and also studied in France with Jean de Reszke. He performed throughout Europe in the 1920s and created the role of Valeriano in Refice's "Cecilia," opposite Claudia Muzio. Back in the US, he was a leading tenor in Chicago and New York and later taught at the University of Oklahoma until 1969.
