[Wagner, Richard. (1813–1883)] Richter, Hans. (1843–1916). "Richter the Ring-Master" - Illustration Celebrating the Conductor's Ring Cycle Performances. Illustration of the conductor, taken from an issue of Punch, or the London Charivari (English humor magazine founded in 1841) dated February 5, 1908, and captioned: "Richter the Ring-Master: Mr. Punch begs to congratulate Dr. Richter on the brilliant success with which he has conducted the first complete performance of Wagner's 'Ring' in English." The illustration shows Richter, baton in hand, watching Brünnhilde stand atop a horse while holding a shield emblazoned with the British flag.  Mounted on board with matte frame,  light surface crease at bottom edge, else fine. 10 x 12 inches (25.4 x 31.2 cm.).

Born in Austria in 1843, Richter had a career-long association with Richard Wagner.  In 1876, he was chosen to conduct the first complete performance of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, and after assisting the composer the following year with some concerts in London, became a regular fixture of the English music scene.
