Born to English parents living in Russia, Albert Coates studied music throughout Europe before beginning his career as a conductor in German opera houses. He was appointed chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1919, serving in the post for four years. Best remembered for his work as a conductor of opera and Russian repertory, Coates was also a composer in his own right, having written seven operas.
