Benois, Nicola. (1901–1988) [Wallmann, Margaret. (1904–1992)]. Interesting letter to Margaret Wallmann. Penned inside an oversize card illustrating a Benois stage design for "Visioni Romani," 25 X 18.5 cm. An interesting letter from one major ballet/opera stage designer to another. Benois sends holiday good wishes to his friend and wishes for the New Year "that your luminous talent will continue to triumph over all the mediocre imitators who try to compete with your genius art!" Signed with the diminutive, "Nicolino."
Benois first established his reputation as a brilliant stage designer working for Baliyev's Chauve-Souris company and in 1936 was appointed resident designer at La Scala, where he was responsible for over 300 productions during his 41 year tenure. A designer in the Romantic, painterly tradition of his father [Alexandre Benois]...he was a master of the unified stage picture and of the technical means needed to achieve it, advising on problems of staging until his death."
