[Puccini, Giacomo. (1858–1924)] Fontana, Ferdinando. (1850–1919). Photograph Signed and Inscribed to Francesco Tamagno. A very scarce original CDV photograph by P. Zambini of Reggio-Emilia, a portrait bust image of the Italian journalist, dramatist and poet who is remembered chiefly for having written the libretti for the first two operas of Giacomo Puccini - "Le Villi" and "Edgar." Fontana has boldly signed and inscribed the photograph "A Francesco Tamagno artista mirabile."
The legendary tenor Francesco Tamagno, who created the role of Verdi's Otello in 1887, had originally been scheduled to sing in the 1889 premiere of Puccini's "Edgar" with a libretto by Fontana. Though he did not in fact sing in the original premiere, he did appear in the first performance of the revised three-act version outside of Italy (Teatro Real, Madrid) in 1892. It is possible that the present image was signed around this time.
