Astruc, Yvonne. (1889 - 1980) & Cortot, Alfred. (1877–1962). Original Photograph in Siena.
Photograph of the French pianist in his later years at a reception, shaking hands with the important vioinist, Yvonne Astruc. Handstamp of Foto Grassi, Siena, Italy, to verso.  Oblong format, 4.5 x 7 inches (11.3 x 17.5 cm).  In very good condition.

The French violinist was one of the leading figures in European violin pedagogy. Granddaughter of the journalist and theatre impresario Gabriel Astruc, she won the Premier Prix at the Conservatoire in 1909. Especially associated with the music of Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Schmitt, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Pierné, Tailleferre, Villa-Lobos, d'Ambrosio, Berkeley, Migot, Boulanger, Enescu (with whom she perfected her skills and later performed in duos), some of these composers expressly dedicated pieces to her.  In 1920 she married the French pianist and teacher Marcel Ciampi and collaborated with him in the following years. In addition to her concert activities, she turned to teaching, among other things at the École normale de musique. Later Astruc founded the École Instrumentale "Yvonne Astruc" in Paris, inviting her old teacher Enescu to teach there. A decisive phase of Astruc's pedagogical activity was her role as assistant to George Enescu at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, where the present photograph was taken. After Enescu's death, Astruc taught at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena from 1955 until 1962. She died in Paris in 1980 at the age of 91, a few weeks after Ciampi.
