Claude Frank, born in Frankfurt, fled from Germany with his family in 1938 and studied piano at the Paris Conservatory until Germany invaded France. The family reached the U.S. in 1941 and settled in New York City. At the time of this photograph, Claude Frank attended Professional Children's School and studied the piano privately with Artur Schnabel. He went on to Columbia University and launched a career as a concert pianist in 1959. He later taught at various schools including the Curtis Institute of Music. He died in New York City at the age of 89. His archives were acquired by the University of Maryland. The violinist Pamela Frank (b. 1967) is his daughter.
