Scriabin's Piano Sonata no. 2 in G sharp minor, titled "Sonate-Fantaisie," was begun in 1892 but not finished until 1897. The pianist Wera Iwanowna Issakowitsch, Scriabin's new wife, made the fair copy to send to Scriabin's patron and publisher, Belaieff. According to the composer himself, the sonata is inspired by various impressions of the ocean: in the first movement the stillness and light of the moon in the evening; and in the second movement the ocean tossed by a storm.
