Schubert, Franz. (1797–1828). Variationen über ein französisches Lied...dem Hrn Ludwig van Beethoven. Op.10. Vienna: Ant. Diabelli et Comp. . [1822]. First edition. Zugeeignet von seinem Verehrer und Bewunderer Franz Schubert. 10tes Werk. [8 Variations in E minor for piano duet, D. 624]. Oblong 4to. (247 X 330 mm). 25 pp. Engraved throughout. [PN] 996. Scattered foxing, one small repaired tear in margin of final page. Very rare variant title page of the original issue. Housed in a green custom box with a leather title plate.

A remarkable early tribute to Beethoven by the greatest of his musical contemporaries. Schubert was one of the pall-bearers at Beethoven's funeral, but other documented connections between the two composers are scarce. Schubert rarely composed variations on foreign themes, but the theme of his Op. 10 variations was composed by Hortense, Queen of Holland and Napoleon's sister-in-law. The set originated at the Esterhazy estate in Szelis (now Slovakia), where he stayed in the summer of 1818 as a music teacher.
