Verdi, Giuseppe. (1813-1901). Les Vêpres siciliennes, Grand Opéra en 5 actes. [Vocal Score]. Paris: Léon Escudier. 1855. First edition. Large 4to (c.33.5 x 25.5cms). 415 pages. Elaborate lithographed title, engraved music. [PN] L.E. 1500 ('Ballet': L.E. 1501), priced at 30f. London bookseller's label, early blue boards, blue-gilt label to spine, very clean throughout and in extraordinary fine condition. Hopkinson 56A (a); Chusid, p.170.

This large and imposing score of Verdi's first French grande opéra, was published just a few weeks after the premiere at the Opéra on 13 June 1855, and may have been prepared during the rehearsals. Some separate numbers were advertised in June 1855 (perhaps reflected in the plate numbers and dual paginations), but no copies are traced by Hopkinson.
