Puccini, Giacomo. (1858–1924). Madama Butterfly. Rare First Edition. . Milan: Ricordi. [February, 1904]. First edition. Tragedia giapponese di L. Illica e G. Giacosa. Musica di Giacomo Puccini. Opera completa. Canto e pianoforte. Riduzione di Carlo Carignani. 4to. 403 pages. [PN] 110000. Ricordi's blind-stamp for February 1904. Frontispiece portrait of the composer. Original printed wrappers nicely rebacked with full green gloth. Small ink dedication at foot of page with facsimile dedication to Queen Elena, small tears to 2 pages, slight foxing to a few pages, overall in fine condition throughout. Hopkinson 6A; Fuld, p.596.
Extremely rare, perhaps the rarest of all major 20th century opera scores. Most copies of this edition were destroyed after the work's disastrous premiere on 27 February 1904, a famous operatic débâcle: "Not only was it hurriedly withdrawn after the first night but publication of the first edition was stopped and copies immediately withdrawn from sale, thus ensuring its considerable rarity" (Hopkinson, p.24). It is in two acts and contains extensive material not found in later versions. Puccini's three-act revision was staged at Brescia on 28 May 1904, the "nuova edizione" of the vocal score having already been published the previous month.
