Holiday, Billie. (1915–1959) [Quackenbush, Doug]. Two Original Photographs at her Birthday Party.
Two rare original doubleweight photographs of the legendary jazz singer, captured by photographer Doug Quackenbush at her birthday party, ca. 1957. Holiday is shown in a lace dress and jeweled earrings, showing off a flower and ribbon corsage; one photograph is a portrait, while the other shows her accepting a cigarette from a male friend, with another woman shown at the right. Stamped on the verso with photographer's credit. 8 x 10 inches. Some small impressions and pin holes along right edge of the oblong image, else in very fine condition.
Revered as one of the greatest and most individual vocalists in the history of blues and jazz, Holiday died from cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 44. These images come from a birthday party towards the end of her life, at which Doug Quackenbush was present. A fashion photographer by trade, Quackenbush spent much of his free time photographing musicians.
