Bolton, Guy. (1884–1979) [Webb, Clifton. (1889–1966)]. Signed Photograph. Signed photograph from the Anglo-American playwright and writer of musical comedies, inscribed to actor Clifton Webb. Bolton is shown in a profile portrait by Moody of New York and has penned at the lower left: "To my dear friend / Clifton Webb / from a fellow laborer in the dramatic vineyard / Guy Bolton / May 1918." Light corner wear with tack holes and one small crease at the lower right; overall fine. 8 x 10 inches (20.2 x 25.3 cm).
Bolton is best known for his early work on the Princess Theatre musicals during the First World War with Wodehouse and the composer Jerome Kern. These shows moved the American musical away from the traditions of European operetta to small scale, intimate productions with what the Oxford Encyclopedia of Popular Music calls "smart and witty integrated books and lyrics, considered to be a watershed in the evolution of the American musical." Bolton and Clifton Webb worked together several times, including on the 1928 musical She's My Baby.
