Wunderlich, Fritz. (1930–1966). Autograph Signature from the month of his tragic early death. Autograph signature from the great tenor, who died tragically young from a fall at the age of 35, signed very shortly before his death. On a small album leaf, he has penned: "Greetings! / Fritz Wunderlich / September 1966." Right edge rough; further signature to the verso. Overall fine. 6.5 x 7.5 inches (16.5 x 19 cm).

Wunderlich sang at the 1966 Salzburg Festival, but two weeks later his promising career was cut short by an accident while he was on a hunting vacation. He fell from a stairway in a friend's country house in Oberderdingen near Maulbronn due to carelessly tied shoes, and died in the University Clinic of Heidelberg just days before his 36th birthday, on September 17, 1966. He was a few weeks away from his Metropolitan Opera debut in New York City as Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni.
