[Bernstein, Leonard. (1918–1990)] Haas, Ernst. (1921 - 1986). "The Creation" - INSCRIBED TO LEONARD BERNSTEIN. New York: Vikin. 1983. First edition. Hardcover. Oblong 4to. 159 pp. Brown cloth boards, gilt titled on spine. Inscribed on the half title "To Leni and Felicia / Ernst Haas" and dated "NYC  Nov '71."  Toning to white pages, which are printed on different stock from the photo plates (those with no evidence of toning). Dust jacket with mild wear at spine and extremities, unclipped with $25 price on front flap. Together with two printed cards identifying the volume as having originally from the Leonard Bernstein Estate.

The images of the Austrian-American photojournalist and color photographer were disseminated by magazines like Life and Vogue and, in 1962, were the subject of the first single-artist exhibition of color photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art. He served as president of the cooperative Magnum Photos, and the present book The Creation (1971) was one of the most successful photography books ever, selling 350,000 copies. Hass and Bernstein's career trajectories intersected, and Haas was responsible for his notable photographs of West Side Story, among other projects with a Bernstein imprint. This is an especially nice association copy, impossible not to also relate with Bernstein's historic recording of Haydn's oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation), released a few years prior, in 1968.
