Castellan-Giampietro, Anaide. (1821 - 1868). Autograph Letter to Alexis Dupont. Rare autograph letter from the great soprano to the important tenor, Alexis Dupont (1796-1874). 3 integral pages, dated 11 February 1856. In fine condition. In French, excusing herself after a period of absence ("En hermite que je me suis faite cet hiver j'ai remis d'un jour a l'autre le projet d'aller voir votre amiable dame et ma chere petite Marie que j'aime tant et jus qu'a present je n'ai peu mettre en projet a execution") and discussing the winter she has passed in the countryside ("mon mari est devenu l'homme des bois et y est toute la journee"). She asks her friend if he can suggest some recently composed Romances because he stays more up-to-date with such matters ("Une dame de Lisbonne me demande les titres d'une demie douzaine de jolies Romances; je n'en connais aucune surtout des nouvelles. Je viens donc a vous qui avez un gout si parfait, et vous prie de me les indiquer. Comme vous voyez je me suis faite une campagnard a l'epreuve de l'hiver meme...").

Born Anaide Castellan in Paris, she was a student of Bordogni and Nourrit and went on to have major success in Paris, London and throughout Italy. After her marriage to tenor Enrico Giampietro in 1840, they travelled together to Mexico where they lived and performed for several years before a triumphant return to Europe in 1844. In London that year, she won an Imperial invitation to St. Petersburg afterthe visiting Emperor Nicholas I heard her sing. The addressee of the letter, tenor Alexis Dupont, was one of the great stars of the Opéra-Comique from 1821-1840. Auber wrote the role of Alphonse in "La Muette de Portici" for him, and he created roles in Rossini's "Guillaume Tell" and Halévy's "La Juive."
