Menuhin, Yehudi. (1916–1999). Important Letter to Pierre Monteux. 2 pp. April 2, no year. In French, signed "Yehudi." A remarkable letter from the great violinist to the conductor Pierre Monteux (1875-1964). Regarding the apparent expectation of the local (San Francisco?) audience that the soloist present an encore following the performance. Menuhin, who will play Brahms Cto. and Ravel's "Tzigane," expresses his discomfort with the idea of following such works with an encore which would "interrupt our collaboration." He notes that Tzigane "is, of some kind, already and encore," but that, if necessary, he would like to play an additional selection still with Monteux and the orchestra, thus avoiding the (by comparison), "funny and pail sonority of the piano." He proposes a few virtuoso works for soloist and orchestra and asks if Monteux would be agreeable to performing together any of these options.
