A student of Georges Mathias (a Chopin student) and of Saint-Saens, he impressed Liszt, Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky with his playing and was celebrated for his beautiful touch and immaculate technique. A renowned teacher, his students included Nikita Magaloff, Guiomar Novaes, Jean Francaix, Yvonne Loriod, Beveridge Webster, Aaron Copland and many others.
