[Paganini, Nicolò. (1782–1840)] [Landseer, Edwin Henry. (1802–1873)]. Paganini in Performance - Engraving. Steel engraving of the legendary violinist, after the famous ink drawing by Sir Edwin Landseer, who saw Paganini perform in 1831. Taken from the book Landseer's Works, where it was published as plate XXVI on the verso of p. 112. In very fine condition. 10.5 x 14.25 inches (26.3 x 36 cm).
Landseer drew an initial sketch of Paganini from memory shortly after seeing the maestro play at a salon given by Marguerite, Countess Blessington in 1831. He later drew a more finished version of the image, from which prints could be made. Capturing Paganini's wild hair, long fingers and dashing playing style, it has remained one of the most recognizable images of the violinist.
