Roussel, Albert. (1869–1937). Padmâvatî - Autograph Musical Quotation. Autograph musical quotation from the important French composer who taught Satie, Golestan, Roland-Manuel and Varèse. He has penned two measures from the second act of his 1923 opera Padmâvatî and boldly signed below.
"Though he was touched by the successive waves of impressionism and neo-classicism in French music, he was an independent figure, his music harmonically spiced and rhythmically vigorous." (Nicole Labelle, Grove Online)
Inspired by a visit to the ruined city of Chittor in Rajputana (now Rajasthan), Roussel's opera Padmâvatî tells the story of Chittor's ruler Ratan-Sen and his legendarily beautiful wife Padmâvatî, as the city is attacked by Mongol warriors. The opera was first performed at the Paris Opera on June 1, 1923.
