The first conduct Bruckner's 7th Symphony and the first to record Beethoven's complete 5th Symphony, Nikisch is regarded as one of the founders of modern conducting.  He held posts as principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandausorchester in Leipzig and the Berlin Philharmonic.
