[Schoenberg, Arnold. (1874-1951)] Pappenheim, Marie. (1882–1966) & Zemlinsky, Louise. (1900–1992) [Perle, George. (1915–2009)]. Verspätete Ernte zerstreuter Saat (Poetry). Collection of poetry (in German) by the Austrian physician, writer and activist, best known as the librettist of Schoenberg's Erwartung (1909), who is credited here as "Marie Pappenheim-Frischauf"; Frischauf was her married name. Vienna: Europäischer Verlag, 1962. 96 pp. Full cloth with gilt lettering. Signature "Louise Zemlinsky" in ink and inscription, "for Dr Perle" in pencil, both to front endpaper. 8 x 5.25 inches (20.5 x 13.1 cm). Slightly browned; board inner hinges partially or fully detached. Overall, in good condition. From the collection of American composer George Perle.

Apparently the first—and probably the only—collection of poetry published as a book from Pappenheim. The title translates as "belated harvest of scattered seed," an allusion to the volume assembling poetry from many years; in some cases, a date is given. Schoenberg painted a portrait of her in the same year in which he composed Erwartung. Pappenheim also translated libretti from other languages into German, and she made herself a name as a dermatologist and (communist) activist. She lived in exile from 1934—first in France, then in Mexico—but returned to Austria in 1947. Louise Zemlinsky, a singer and painter, was married to the composer Alexander Zemlinsky from 1930 and settled with him in the United States.
