Rameau, Jean-Philippe. (1683–1764). [Pigmalion, Acte de Ballet] (score). Paris: L'Auteur / Veuve Bovin / Leclair. [1748]. First edition (?).
Oblong bound folio. Engraved. No PN. 43 pp. Text in French. Contemporaneous boards, quarter cloth. 10 x 13.25 inches (25 x 33.5 cm). Some contemporaneous notes in ink to margins. Signature "Poynotte" (?) in pencil to head of first page. Title is lacking and part of lower margin of first page of music has been cut out, but music is complete. Book block detached from binding; some soiling and damp staining; otherwise in good condition. Despite the notable condition flaws, this is a very rare score, with only two copies ever having appeared at auction, including that of the Andre Meyer collection.

This edition was published with two different title pages. For the supposedly earlier one, with Rameau's address at Rue des bons enfants, see Harvard Theatre Collection M1520,R212 F4 1748 (included in the Wikipedia article on this opera); for the other, with Rameau's address at Rue St-Honoré, vis-à-vis le Caffé de Dupuis, see two copies in Brussels and Pavia (both accessible at IMSLP). Both editions were printed from the same plates, apparently without changes. It is impossible to decide which of the two titles came with the present copy, but the clear print, without cracks or smudges, suggests that that plates were still fresh, which supports the idea that this is a first edition.

This highly successful "ballet" (in modern terms, an opera with an unusual amount of dance) was first performed on August 27, 1748. There were numerous revivals up to the French Revolution. A new edition published in 1913 revived interest in the work, which has since remained one of the most frequently performed operas by Rameau.
