Holder, Geoffrey. (1930 - 2014)[Lindquist, John. (1910–1985)]. Signed Photograph from Jacob's Pillow. Superb original photograph of the great American dancer and choreographer, inscribed "To Paul / yours Geoffrey Holder" in black ink to the lower right corner.  The photograph was taken by dance photographer John Lindquist, the longtime photographer for Jacob's Pillow.  Photographer's stamp to verso.  In very fine condition. 10 x 8 inches (25.4 x 20.3 cm.).

Born in Trinidad and Tobago and standing at 6’6”, Geoffrey was a "dancer, choreographer, actor, composer, designer and painter who used his manifold talents to infuse the arts with the flavor of his native West Indies and to put a singular stamp on the American cultural scene." (NY TimesOver the course of his career, he directed a dance troupe, danced on Broadway and at the Metropolitan Opera, and won two Tony Awards in 1975 for his roles as Director and Costume Designer for the Broadway production of 'The Wiz.” His choreography was performed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Dance Theater of Harlem. He acted onstage and in films (he played Punjab in Annie!) and was also an accomplished painter, photographer and sculptor. 

John Lindquist (1890–1980), who had begun photographing Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers in 1938, was the official photographer of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival until his death in 1980. In this role, he knew and photographed many of the most important American dancers of the mid-twentieth century, as well as traditional dancers from cultures around the world. A collection of more than 7,000 of Lindquist's dance photographs is held at Houghton Library at Harvard.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
