D’Aranyi, Jelly. (1893–1966). Signed Postcard Photograph with Autograph Note.
Rare signed postcard photograph from the great Hungarian violinist, who is shown holding her instrument in an elegant dress and necklace and has signed boldly over the image, dating July 1918. Addressed and postmarked July 10, 1918 with a personal note on the verso in D'Aranyi's hand. Silvering to the image and poor contrast to the signature; mounting remnants on verso; overall very good. 3.5 x 5.5 inches (9 x 14 cm). Signed photographs of D'Aranyi are very scarce.

Grand-niece of Joseph Joachim, and sister of the violinist Adila Fachiri, Jelly D'Aranyi was a Hungarian violinist who made her home in London. She and Béla Bartók gave sonata recitals together in London and Paris presented his violin sonatas together in London in March 1922 (No. 1) and May 1923 (No. 2). She is the dedicatee of Ravel's "Tzigane" and of the Vaughan Williams' "Concerto Academico" and on the basis of messages she received at a 1933 séance, allegedly from Robert Schumann, she played a curious role in the emergence and 1937 world premiere of Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto, performing the London premiere of the work.
