Autograph musical quotation, unsigned, from the important French composer and conductor, who has penned an extract from his Memoriale for flute and strings, identified at the foot. Together with an accompanying autograph letter (translated from the German): "To Heinrich Zaag with my best wishes, this autograph – a short excerpt from Memoriale. P. Boulez." In very fine condition. AMQS and note 8 x 6 inches (20.5 x 15 cm).
Memoriale, a haunting work for flute and eight instruments, is a revision of a short 1971 piece commemorating the death of Igor Stravinsky. Boulez collaborated with Ensemble InterContemporain’s principal flautist Lawrence Beauregard on the revision and when Beauregard died in 1985 Boulez decided it should become a tribute to him, a memorial.
