Known primarily as a painter and textile designer, Delaunay worked alongside her husband, Robert, on the concept of simultaneous colours highlighting pure tones and geometric forms. In the 1920s, she applied these researches to textile and to dresses rapidly adopted by avant-garde women.  She designed the present box for the Parisian couturier Jean Patou, know for his modernist, tubular 1920s sportswear, and as the inventor of the contemporary masculine tie and use of the monogram.
