Shaw's essay "The Sanity of Art" was a reply to Max Nordau's 1892 book Degeneration, which condemned "degenerate" art and the degeneration of society. With his usual wit, Shaw defends artists and thinkers including Wagner, Ibsen, and Ruskin.
