"Performed by the composer 'for the first time' in New Orleans, 13 Mar 1855 (Le Courrier de la Louisiane). The initial publication had little commercial success. Firth & Pond was glad to sell the copyright to William Hall, Gottschalk's new publisher, who brought out a revised edition in 1856...The Last Hope - the title refers to the solace of music to those in distress - under the skilled hands of the composer, achieved a popularity similar to that of Paderewski's Minuet in modern times."
