Armstrong, Louis. (1901–1971). Signed Diet Plan!. A fantastic three-page typed plan to "Lose Weight The 'Satchmo' Way," signed and inscribed in green ink at the top of the first page, and with several additional autograph notes throughout. Besides signing the final page as "Satchmo," Armstrong has added a P.S. on the second page: "P.S. might help Cancer. Cured my ULCERS. Hmm?" and at the foot of the last page his "Satchmo slogan: the more you shit, the 'thiner' / 'HEALTHIER' / you git / no shit." This copy is inscribed to a Mr. Dave Duschoff with "Many thanks from me and my 'ALL STARS' for a fine engagement." Some light toning around the edges and a staple mark, but overall in fine condition, with a very bold and crisp signature. 3 pp. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.6 x 27.9 cm.)
Armstrong was greatly interested in health and bodily functions, advocating the use of laxatives to control weight. He would publish his ideas in a book called Lose Weight the Satchmo Way, and also appeared in advertisements for his favorite herbal laxative, Swiss Kriss. In this typescript, he describes a regimen of regular meals supplemented by plentiful orange juice and Swiss Kriss. Not shying away from the gory details, he writes: "Your first dose will be real heavy, in order to start blasting right away, and get the ball to rolling. After you get over your surprises and whatnots, you'll be very happy..." The rest of the text is filled with similarly folksy admonishments and bad puns!
