Primrose, William. (1904-1982). Signed Photograph to an Ysaye Student. Scarce signed photograph from the leading violist of his time, a member of the London String Quartet and the NBC Symphony under Toscanini before embarking on an unprecedented successful solo career as violist. Vintage glossy 7.5 x 10 inch photo of Primrose in a relaxed pose, signed and inscribed in fountain pen "To Maurice with my warmest wishes for the greatest success / William Primrose / Toronto. April, 1935." Stamped by the photographer on the verso, rather amusingly, "Howard Coster / Photographer of Men." Small surface tears to upper and lower margins, otherwise in fine condition. Signed photographs of Primrose are elusive.

Maurice Solway (1906-2001) was a violinist, music teacher, composer, author and actor who lived and worked for most of his life in Toronto. A student in Hamburg of Géza de Kresz, he studied in Belgium with Ysaye from 1926 - 28.
