Brahms, Johannes. (1833–1897). Autograph Note on Calling Card to the first woman to perform Brahms's Concerto in B flat, opus 83.. Autograph note (unsigned) on the verso of Brahms's visiting card. The recto printed with his name and address (IV. Karlsgasse 4.), the verso with the name and address of the addressee in Brahms's autograph: "Fraulein Marie Baumayer, Mariahilf, Breitegasse 4, 3ter Stock (4th floor), mit freundlichem Gruss." Ca. 3-1/2" x 2-1/4". Together with the remnants of the autograph envelope, addressed in Brahms's hand to Baumayer in Wien, Neubau, Siebensterngasse 2, 4. St., with postmark of 11.11.95 to verso (torn and partially lacking). Ca. 4-1/2" x 2-7/8". With a 3-1/4" x 5" reproduction portrait of the composer.


Baumeyer was the first woman to perform Brahms's Concerto in B flat, opus 83. "She played it in Graz in 1883, and later, in the composer's presence, at one of her concerts in Vienna." May: The Life of Johannes Brahms, Vol. II p. 201. She was also an owner of the autograph of opus 96, Vier Lieder. From the collection of the noted American harpsichordist Igor Kipnis.
