[Literature & Art] Wells, H.G. (1866-1946). Signed Portrait. Original graphite drawing portrait of Wells, signed " H. G. Wells" to lower right of image in brown ink. The artist's signature (“Swamy”) lower right. 8 7/8” x 6 3/8”. The signature light but visible and otherwise in fine condition.

Surprisingly scarce signed image of the English novelist and social commentator, best remembered today for the science fiction novels he published between 1895 and 1901: The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, When the Sleeper Wakes, and The First Men in the Moon. With Jules Verne, Wells is sometimes referred to as "The Father of Science Fiction."

Swamy (1911-1983) was an Indian artist who did portraits of Western notables, perhaps the most well known being that of Albert Einstein. Two of his paintings are part of the British Library Collection.
