[Jazz & Song] Piaf, Edith. (1915–1963) [Caire, Reda. (1908–1963)]. Early Signed Photograph to Reda Caire. Magnificent early Studio Lorette & Rudolph photograph of the great French chanteuse in the earliest years of her career, signed and inscribed in blue ink ca. 1937 to the popular singer RÉDA CAIRE: «Quelle dédicace mettre ici pour toi, Reda! Tu es un grand artiste, tu le sais, tu n'en est pas plus prétentieux pour ça, tu le sais aussi! À toi donc le meilleur des camarades toute mon amitié vraie. Piaf». ["What dedication to write here for you, Reda! You are a great artist, this you know, and you aren't at all stuck about it, this you know also! To you, thus, the best of comrades all my true friendship. Piaf."] 23 x 18 cm. Signed by the photographer l.r., mounted to a rigid backing with scattered creasing but overall very good.

An interesting association. The Egyptian-born Reda Caire - whose real name was Joseph Gandhour - was a popular singer of operettes in Paris in the 1930s and 1950s. In the spring of 1937, Piaf and Caire toured together (mostly spa towns), sponsored by the Parisian music-hall, L'ABC. The present photograph was likely signed around this time.
