By the end of 1842, Schumann had already completed three of the four pieces of the Op. 88 group, but publication was delayed due to his focus on other works, including his Piano Quartet, Op. 47 and the First Piano Trio, Op. 63. At the end of 1849 and at the beginning of 1850, he revised the pieces and added one more before its publication later that year.
