The painter and designer Vera Ermolaeva was a major figure in the Russian Suprematist movement immediately following the Communist revolution of 1917. Influenced by Malevich's teachings early in her artistic development, she studied in St. Petersburg in the studio of Bernshteyn and Shervud (1911-1914) and then in Petrograd. In 1918, she was a member of the group IZO in Petrograd and during the same year she worked at the Municipal Museum there and organized the Artel [cooperative association] of painters of Sevodnia (Today). In 1919, she replaced Chagall as director of the The First Vitebsk Higher People's Art College, a post she held until 1923. During this period she was also a member of Unovis group in Moscow and then directed the Laboratory of Colour at the Institute of Artistic Culture in Leningrad (1923 - 1926) and beginning in 1925, worked in the Children's Literature Department of the State publishing house.
