[Film & Theatre] Langtry, Lillie. (1853–1929). Autograph Letter Contesting a Debt . Intriguing note in the bold hand of the legendary actress, royal mistress, confidante of Oscar Wilde, racehorse owner, maker and spender of fortunes and one of the most elusive natural beauties of all time. In the letter, addressed to a Sergeant McGuire, Langtry quotes the besieged Macbeth, and appears to be settling a debt, but contesting a larger one, on behalf of a troublesome unnamed man.

The text reads: "Sergeant McGuire, 'The cry is still they come.' I enclose another bill for drinks or rather the means of drinking them. For goodness sake don't let them give him up his money it's owed over & over again in every direction & until he proves why I owe him 26 pounds I certainly shan't pay him, as it's an impossible amount to have run up in one week. I am going abroad on Saturday 29 - I hope everything is all right. Yours faithfully, Lillie Langtry."

On letterhead embossed "2 Cadogan Gardens S.W." Slight creasing; otherwise in fine condition. One sheet folded to 12.6 x 20 cm.
