Original Sarony of New York cabinet photograph of the English novelist, playwright, and short story writer known for The Woman in White and The Moonstone, considered the first modern English detective novel. Taken ca. 1874 during Collins' tour of the United States and Canada giving readings of his work, when he met American writers including Oliver Wendell Holmes and Mark Twain, and began a friendship with Napoleon Sarony who took several portraits of him. On the original black Sarony mount with elegant red caption, slightly trimmed at the lower edge. Light wear to the edges and one chip to the side of the photograph; otherwise in fine condition. 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.7 x 16 cm).
