An interesting autograph letter, dated Dec 8, 1919, stating (in part) that "the orchesra is still on tour for one week and just when back in Boston, I shall be very pleased to send you a photo of mine." Monteux was appointed conductor of Diaghilev's Ballet Russe in 1911 and thereby conducted the premieres of Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), Chant du Rossignol (The Nightingale), Petrushka, Daphis et Chloe and Jeux. At the time of this letter, he was conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, in charge of French repertory, and he moved to the Boston Symphony Orchestra the following year. Between 1936 - 1952, he was conductor of the San Francisco Symphony.
