Casals, Pablo. (1876–1973) [Bach, J. S. (1685–1750)]. Prelude from Cello Suite No. 3 - Autograph Musical Quotation. Autograph musical quotation from the Catalan cellist, composer and conductor, who has penned the first phrase of Bach's cello suite no. 3 in C major and dated 1936 -- the year in which Casals recorded the second and third suites at Abbey Road studios in London. On a small trimmed leaf, mounted on black card. Slightly smudged, with light toning; otherwise in fine condition. 4.25 x 3 inches (10.8 x 7.7 cm).

Bach's cello suites were largely unknown in 1890, when a 13-year-old Casals picked up the score in a second-hand shop. He would go on to make the suites a staple of the cello repertoire, eventually recording them in the 1930's during the tumult of the Spanish Civil War.
