Brahms, Johannes. (1833–1897). Three Original Photographs by Maria Fellinger. Three original photographs of the great composer, photographed ca. 1893-6 by his friend Maria Fellinger and all on her own gold-embossed mounts. Brahms is shown looking out of a window (this photograph is dated in several sources as Easter Monday, March 26, 1894); leaning on one arm over the back of his chair, facing the camera and holding a cigar between his fingers; and sitting outside next to an empty garden chair, also holding a cigar. Light toning; a few very light surface marks; adhesive mounting remnants on the versos of all three photographs, but not affecting the recto. Overall in fine condition. Photograph of Brahms looking out of the window: 3.75 x 5.25 inches (9.5 x 13.2 cm); other two photographs each 4 x 5.25 inches (10.3 x 13.3 cm).
Maria Fellinger and her husband Dr. Richard Fellinger were close friends of Brahms, with whom he spent his Christmas Eve later in life and who hosted many musical soirées. An accomplished amateur singer and artist, Maria Fellinger frequently performed Brahms' songs at musical evenings, and also captured several well-known photographs of the composer as an older man. Richard Fellinger, a trusted friend, served as Brahms' executor.
