Bernstein's Symphony no. 1 was composed in 1942 and programmatically follows the Biblical story of the prophet Jeremiah. The work uses texts from the Book of Lamentations in Hebrew, sung by a mezzo-soprano. Premiered in 1944, it won a New York Music Critics' Circle Award. The symphony was one of the works Bernstein conducted on his first Israel tour in 1947, beginning a long association with Israel.
