Puccini, Giacomo. (1858–1924). Madame Butterfly. SIGNED by CARUSO, FARRAR, TOSCANINI, SCOTTI etc!!!. G. Ricordi. Piano score, boldly signed by the majority of the cast for the evening of November 18, 1908. According to the MET archive, this is the sole performance featuring these artists together. We cannot say, however, that the signatures all come from this night, for Mme. Farrar has written the date 1912 above her name. In addition it is signed by two conductors, Arturo Toscanini and Giulio Setti, though there is no recorded performance of the opera with both Caruso and Setti.
The score is signed by the following singers:
Cio-Cio-San.............Geraldine Farrar
Pinkerton...............Enrico Caruso
Suzuki..................Rita Fornia
Sharpless...............Antonio Scotti
Goro....................Angelo Badà
Kate Pinkerton..........Helen Mapleson
Commissioner............Bernard Bégué
Conductor...............Arturo Toscanini
With typical humor, Caruso has written “Particularly” just below his name!
This score was originally owned by a Mrs. Franz Herbert Hirschland and is sold together with a letter to her niece, to whom this score was given in 1933. It is held in a period custom leather, gold-embossed case. Cover of score and first few pages are detached - signature page is just barely attached. Cover illustration is bright with some slight wear. Leather case with silk interior has minor wear.
