Lehmann, Lotte. (1888–1976) [Melchior, Lauritz. (1890-1973)]. Autograph Christmas Card to Lauritz Melchior. Autograph Christmas card from the German soprano to Danish-American tenor Lauritz Melchior. 1 p., n.d. [ca. 1960's-1970's]. On the inside of a printed card, Lehmann has penned (translated from the German): "My dear Lauritz— I can only hope that you are doing better than I am: the arthritis is bothering me a lot and I have to walk with two canes. But I mustn't complain; my whole life I've been free from pain, therefore it is twice as hard to endure it! Yours, Lotte." Very fine. 5 x 7.5 inches (13 x 18.7 cm).

Danish-American singer Laurentz Melchior was the pre-eminent Wagnerian tenor of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, and has since come to be considered the quintessence of his voice type. His friendship with the superlative soprano Lotte Lehmann, particularly known as the creator of several Strauss roles, began when they sang together at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1930's.
