Affre, Agustarello. (1858 - 1931). Rare ALS from "The French Tamagno.". An uncommon autograph note from the important French tenor, penned on the verso of a postcard showing San Francisco's Union Square. Postmarked December 1911 and sending New Year's greetings.
For 20 years he was a principal lyric-heroic tenor at the Opéra in Paris, where he sang in numerous premieres, including the first performance at the Opéra of "Pagliacci." In 1891 he sang in the première of Le mage by Massenet, who found his voice "vibrant as pure crystal." Later, he sang at Covent Garden and throughout the USA, where in 1913 he became director of the New Orleans Opera. A prolific recording artist, he sang Romeo in one of the earliest complete operatic recordings (1912), where his powerful tone shows clearly why he was often described as the "French Tamagno."
