[Joachim, Joseph. (1831–1907)] Sargent, John Singer. (1856–1925) . Joseph Joachim - SIGNED LITHOGRAPH PORTRAIT. Remarkable original lithograph portrait of the great Hungarian violinist and Brahms collaborator, by the most successful portrait artist of his era. Printed on Chine-collé, signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right mount, bearing also the printed signature of the subject "Joseph Joachim / London, May 16th 1904." 15 1/4 x 13 1/4. Stains and chipping to the edges, mostly not affecting the portrait and slightly touching the edge of the signature. Nicely matted and framed to an overall size of 16 x 19.5 inches.

From a very limited but unnumbered examples issued, we are aware of no copies having appeared at auction in 70 years of records.

“Had Sargent taken to music instead of painting he would have been as great a musician as he was a painter,” the violinist Joseph Joachim is claimed to have said of his friend, the painter. Music was part of Sargent's identity as a painter throughout his life and career and he maintained friendships with prominent musicians and composers, actively supported the composer Gabriel Fauré, played the piano himself, and was a frequent visitor to café-concerts, music halls, and orchestral performances.
