Beginning in 1933, when she was 8 years old, Rachmaninoff composed a series of short songs for her which he called "Sophie's Songs." Rachmaninoff spent the summers of 1940 and 1941 in Centerport, a hamlet in the Town of Huntington, at the former Honeyman Estate, and it was there that he wrote “Symphonic Dances,” his last major orchestral composition before his death, overlooking Long Island Sound. Though signed in 1943, the present photograph was taken there.
