[Memento Mori] [Death Notice] [Victoire Lansiarre (1692–1791)]. 18th Century Hand-Painted Death Notice. Hand-painted announcement of the death, at age 99, of Victoire Lansiarre, the Abbess of the Cistercian Monastery of Notre-Dame du Verger in the Diocese of Cambrai in France. Paper decorated in gouache with a skull and crossbones along with two coats of arms, with the text:

"Les âges sere nouvellent, la figure du monde passe sans cesse, les morts et les vivante remplacent et se succedent continuellement; rien ne demeure, tout change, tout s'use, tout s'éteint dieu seul demeure tou jours sa même. / L'an 1791 le 3 de mars est décédée munie des Sacrémens de l'Eglise la respectable Dame, madame Victoire Lanfiarre Abbesse du Verger l'espace de 37 ans; dans la quatre vint-dix-neuf années de son age, & la Soixante-Seize de Sa Profession religieuse. Requiescat in pace."

("The times are new, the shape of the word changes without end, the dead and the living are continually replacing and succeeding one another; nothing lasts, everything changes, everything wears out, everything leaves. Only God Himself remains. / On March 3 in the year 1791, with the Sacraments of the Church, died the respectable lady Madame Victoire Lanfiarre, Abbesse du Verger for 37 years. She was in the ninety-ninth year of her life, and seventy-sixth of her religious profession. Rest in peace.")
