In part, "I am very sorry to come and once again abuse you, but the world is like that now." No year is specified, but the substance of the letters suggests that they were written ca. 1940–44. Marcel Landowski was a French composer and arts administrator, serving for many years as the French Ministry of Cultural Affairs' director of music. He was the son of Paul Landowski, sculptor of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

The great conductor Pierre Monteux was known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony.
