[Indian Music] Barve, Manhar. (1910–?). Original Photograph.
Original ca. 1920 Wiele & Klein of Madras photograph of Master Manhar Barve, a child prodigy from India, shown in a striking full-length portrait seated with what appears to be a modified banjo.  The photograph measuring 14.5 x 10cm, on original photographer's card mount with embossed border reading "Master Manhar Barve / Infant Prodigy of Music / Bombay, India" to the lower margin.  Edges of mount toned, some stains to verso and a few creases to photograph and mount, overall very good. 7 x 10 inches [18 x 25.5 cm] overall.

Barve was a popular teacher in Mumbai.  "Barve was primarily a vocalist but also played ghungrootarang, kaach tarang, jaltarang, and kashtarang.  He also taught tabla in his class." (Scroll. In) For further early biographical information about Master Manahar Barve see Ethel Rosenthal, The Story of Indian Music and Its Instruments, Willam Reeves, 1928, especially pp. 141-9.
